About
Carousel and Screen Archive South East present a 30 minute screening of some very old and some very new short films.
Students from three Brighton and Hove SEN schools took inspiration from the city’s pioneer early film-makers to make their own take on some of the stories.
The screenings precede Silver Screen, a day of workshops and activities for learning disabled young people, organised by Carousel.
Come and see the work of young learning disabled artists paired with radical and inventive moving image from the 1890’s.
Supported by Heritage Lottery Fund.

Programme (not in order of presentation):
Downs Park School
The Horrors - a couple of friends go to a Halloween party; one of the friends notices something spooky.
The film is inspired by Mary Jane's Mishap, in which an accident-prone woman meets an explosive end, made in 1903 by George Albert Smith.
Ghost Train - two inspectors of a fairground go on board a ghost train to monitor the ride.
It is inspired by The Kiss in the Tunnel, a studio scene in which a couple kiss inside a train carriage, bookended by footage shot from the front of a train as it enters and emerges from a tunnel, produced in 1899 by George Albert Smith.
Downs View School
The Magical Teapot - a thief steals a magical teapot from the local cafe and something mysterious happens.
This film is inspired by James Williamson’s Stop Thief! (date unknown) which creates a narrative action with multiple scenes, which are interconnected, action taking place in different locations, breaking down into a set of shots.
Headstart School
Bad Santa - Bad Santa steals the Ooogalooga’s Christmas presents from under the tree one Christmas eve. The Ooogalooga wakes up and captures Santa.
This animated film is inspired by George Albert Smith’s 1898 Santa Claus, which was filmed in St Anne’s Wells gardens and features Smith’s wife Laura and his children Harold and Dorothy. It includes a pioneering ‘Vision Scene’ a super-imposed scene of Santa on the roof.
Carousel helps learning disabled artists develop and manage their creative lives, true to their voice and vision, challenging expectations of what great art is and who can create it. It produces the biennial Oska Bright Film Festival, the world’s first and biggest learning disability film festival. www.carousel.org.uk
