About
‘[W]henever conventions of subject and form outlast the impetus that formed them, they are felt to be inadequate to expressing life.’ – Caryl Churchill
Created by the University of Sussex Third Year Drama Finalists, A Passerby Starts Dancing stages a layering of eclectic texts by the renowned playwright Caryl Churchill.
An artist celebrated for her active political, social and global conscience, Caryl Churchill has developed experimental theatrical forms, which have radically challenged the ways in which we perceive and experience the world.
Paying homage to Churchill’s formal radicalism and investigating the ‘palimpsestuous’ porosity of time and space, the Drama Finalists interweave scenes from across her far-reaching collection of plays, exploring the use of montage, simultaneity and layering.
‘Churchill’s achievement was to break through that kind of conservative, male thinking to capture the fragmentation of life and show that each new play was an adventure into the unknown.’ – The Guardian
‘The palimpsest is an involuted phenomenon where otherwise unrelated texts are involved and entangled, intricately interwoven, interrupting and inhabiting each other.’ – Sarah Dillon
