Presented by Situations and Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts

Newhaven Fort, East Sussex, is the last of a long series of defences built on the cliffs overlooking Seaford Bay, the ramparts and extensive tunnel network holding 150 years of history.

This spring, during the centenary of the First World War, composer Verity Standen will create a new immersive, choral experience at Newhaven Fort, a site of historic significance in the stories of conscientious objection. The performance will be devised with and performed by local male singers of all ages.

During the First World War, the Fort became a part of larger defences, linking with the nearby town of Seaford – the site of a work camp that now lies buried underneath the town. The North Camp at Seaford housed a number of conscientious objectors, firstly before their deportation to Northern France, and subsequently for those who refused to fight and were put to work on the road improvements between Seaford and Newhaven.

All ages are welcome. The estimated running time is 45 minutes. Please arrive 10 minutes before the performance starts.

Tickets can be booked via:

Accessibility:

We are passionate about making our work accessible to as many people as possible. Refrain at Newhaven Fort will be a performance across the entire site of the fort – involving navigation of different levels, multiple steps and narrow tunnels. To discuss with us the journey the audience will take, please call 0117 930 4282.

Performances will take place come rain or shine, so please ensure you are prepared for being outdoors in all weathers.

Getting there:

The town of Newhaven is situated between Brighton and Eastbourne. Newhaven is well sign posted from the A27 and all roads into the town have brown signs directing visitors to Newhaven Fort. If using satellite navigation, the postcode is BN9 9DS.

Trains run regularly to Newhaven Town Station, approximately 1.1 miles (1.8km) from the Fort. Taxis can be picked up outside the station or in the town centre.

If walking, head towards the town centre, over the swing bridge and take the first left to walk alongside the river, past Newhaven Marina and on to the Fort.

The Brighton & Hove Buses Coaster service (Number 12) runs regularly between Brighton and Eastbourne and buses stop throughout the town centre, approximately 0.7 miles (1.1km) from the Fort.

Free parking is available in the visitor car park, which is signposted from Fort Road.

Two allocated Disabled Car Parking bays are available for visitors in the Moat area (just outside main entrance), visitors should follow the signage up Fort Rise, rather than follow the signs to the general Car Park.

Full information about how to get to Newhaven Fort can be found here
